Toshiba Enters HDMI Semiconductor Market with HDMI Receriver and Transmitter ICS
World's First Single-Chip, Dual Port HDMI Receiver Provides Superior Audio/Video Quality
San Jose, California / December 15, 2003 — Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. (TAEC)* today announced its entry into the High-Definition Multimedia Interface™ (HDMI™) semiconductor market with HDMI receiver and transmitter ICs. Designated TC90700FG, the receiver is the world's first single-chip, dual port HDMI receiver. It enables the reception of secure, uncompressed, high-definition digital video and multi-channel digital audio from two different HDMI-enabled video and audio sources. The HDMI transmitter, designated TC90701FG, enables streaming of secure, standard-, enhanced- and high-definition digital video and multi-channel digital audio from set top boxes, DVD-players, media gateways, and other A/V source components to HDMI-enabled video and audio displays and receivers. Toshiba is currently sampling these devices to select customers and will demonstrate them at the 2004 International CES© using a live high-definition video feed.
"As one of the original seven founders of the HDMI consortium, Toshiba Corporation has been instrumental in developing and promoting widespread adoption of this next-generation digital interface specification for consumer electronics products. We are now sampling our first HDMI semiconductor products to select customers and believe we are well-positioned to capture a significant share of the market," said David Cruikshank, senior business development engineer for digital consumer products in the ASSP Business Unit at Toshiba America Electronic Components, Inc. Strong adoption of HDMI technology is expected due to its superior video quality through an all-digital link between digital sources and displays, content protection with HDCP 1.1 encryption, and convenience from replacing up to eleven video and audio cables with one.
"We believe our HDMI products serve an unmet market need for superior audio quality by delivering up to 8 channels of 24-bit digital audio at 192 kilohertz (kHz) sampling frequency," Cruikshank continued. "This offering complements our existing product line-up for set top box/TV applications and extends the company's leadership in the digital consumer segment."
