HDMI Founders Hitachi, Matsushita (Panasonic), Philips, Silicon Image, Sony, Thomson and Toshiba Release Final HDMI 1.0 Compliance Test Specification
Sunnyvale, California / July 21, 2003 — High-Definition Multimedia Interface™ (HDMI™) Founders Hitachi, Matsushita Electric (Panasonic), Royal Philips Electronics, Silicon Image, Sony Corporation, Thomson, and Toshiba Corporation today released the final 1.0 Compliance Test Specification for HDMI, the all-digital consumer electronics interface combining high-definition video and multi-channel audio.
With the availability of the HDMI 1.0 Compliance Test Specification, HDMI Adopters can now
test their products to assist with verifying HDMI compliance and to bring their products to market with the confidence that they will interoperate with other HDMI devices. Products must pass HDMI compliance testing prior to featuring the HDMI logo on such product or literature.
"Consumers' seemingly insatiable demand for increasingly rich multimedia experiences will require higher bandwidth interconnectivity for capture, delivery and display," said Jack Gold, Vice President, META Group. "However, no matter how well defined or capable a new interface may be, without full compliance testing to assure inter-vendor product compatibility, especially in the early product deployment stage, the initiative will ultimately fail. HDMI's decision to test products for compatibility and promote interoperability will increase customer confidence and help solidify its adoption."
As mandated by the HDMI Adopter Agreement, adopters must submit their first product in four HDMI product categories for compliance testing at an HDMI Authorized Testing Center (ATC). The four HDMI categories are source (e.g. DVD player, set-top box), sink (e.g. digital TV), repeater (e.g. A/V receiver) and cable. ATCs are operated by Silicon Image in Sunnyvale, Calif. and Matsushita in Osaka, Japan, and are currently accepting products for testing. Subsequent products in the above categories may be self-tested by the manufacturer according to the guidelines set forth in the HDMI Compliance Test Specification.
Sony General Manager, of Projection Display Company, Satoshi Ohno stated, "We are pleased that the HDMI Compliance Test Spec is finalized, and we look forward to sending our HDMI products out for testing and to continuing the momentum behind HDMI."
HDMI combines high-definition video and multi-channel audio in a single, all-digital interface with a bandwidth of up to 5 Gigabits/sec. Benefits include uncompressed digital quality, fewer cables and a small, user-friendly connector suitable for a wide range of CE components. HDMI also supports bi-directional communication between devices, enabling the DTV to make intelligent decisions on how to best render images. Since its release in January of 2003, more than 30 companies have become adopters of the HDMI v 1.0 Specification.
Versions 1.0 of both the HDMI and the Compliance Test Specification are
